Shoe trees

The feather-light nut-wood trees are fitted exactly to the finished shoe.
The outer form of the last is taken from the last using a template, and transferred to the nut-wood block. This is then worked on with wood-carving tools, rasps, sand paper and the finest steel wool.
Ultimately the tree is hollowed out by hand, the boreholes are put in, and the brass hinge inserted. |
