Shoe trees
The feather-light nut-wood trees are fitted exactly to the finished shoe. The outer form of the last is taken from the last using a template, and transferred to the nut-wood block.
This is then worked on with wood-carving tools, rasps, sand paper and the finest steel wool.
Ultimately the tree is hollowed out by hand, the boreholes are put in, and the brass hinge inserted.
For the making of a pair of our shoe trees it takes the last maker approximately eight hours.
