Does a shoemaker make a pair of shoes single-handedly?
Without doubt the rural, rustic shoemaker was able to make very simple shoes on his own in the workshop. First class urban handicraft always requires divided specialisation.
Until today our trade is still divided into shoe making and closing, the making of the shoe upper.
In England the work division is most advanced and divided into:
Fitter, Lastmaker, Patterncutter, Clicker, Closer, Maker and Treemaker. The handstiching (hand-sewing of uppers) is actually also a profession of its own.
The allocation of separate working phases to home workers or workshops is very common and practical, whereby the last-making and the upper-leather cutting always remains with the shoemakers firm.
